I have been away from posting for the last few weeks due to a very tragic death to a very dear boy close to our hearts.

Daniel was my oldest son's very best childhood friend and this event took hold of our hearts deeply...

During my usual morning catch up on emails, photo editing, etc. I happened to land on Flickr on a day when they were highlighting 'wishing trees' with beautiful pictures of healing written words hanging from trees....
I was so inspired I started a 'wishing tree' in memory of our beloved Daniel for all who loved him to go to the tree and keep his spirit alive through our hopes and dreams......blowing in the wind out to the universe drifting up so they may come true.

This is a small video of Finn, my son, folding a zine for his art shop...He watched a video of this project on youtube and wanted to make one himself for his shop.

In the video Finn did not know I was filming him.....he is a little shy...... he eventually finds out I am filming and gives me a look....

Finn has been folding paper since he was very very young and if you check out my flickr stream you will find a video of him at a small age making a paper airplane.

I am hearing and seeing all the stories of the major WINTER storms hitting so many parts of the US right now.....and I can totally understand and relate to your pain....This is my reality from November to March every single winter in Revelstoke BC Canada......

I AM SO DONE WITH IT!

I have been dreaming lately of a change....a big change as I just have such a hard time dealing with the snow. It is so much work and even though it is beautiful I am thinking now I do not have to live in 30ft of it every year!

Any suggestions as to where I should move?

I was thinking Bend Oregon or Washington State somewhere????

We have had a few days of beautiful sunshine lifting spirits. Even though when it is sunny here the temps drop drastically down to -10 Celsius or lower....brrrrrrr...I will still take it over the gloomy gray wet days of winter any day!

I love the way they look when they are dried just before the bisque fire all creamy milky white kinda dusty and raw.

Our day yesterday consisted of general lounging in our PJ's, a trip to the pottery studio to glaze some bits and pieces, then a walk at dusk down to the exposed river bed by our house.

Winter is looming bringing us shorter days and hidden treasures hiding beneath what used to be covered by the Illicelliwaet river.

We love to go down to the river bed and hunt for amazing rocks created by Ms. Nature!

My day job keeps me posted at a hospital preforming duties in various departments and locations throughout the local hospital. When I was in the grocery store line today I was saddened to read the PEOPLE magazine cover regarding all of the teen suicides taking place in North America.

Most of you who read my blog know I have a gay youth son living a very productive, happy, "OUT" life. Our community supports accepts and loves him and I am SO very thankful that we are blessed to live here so yes, he can make it out of High School happy and go on to live a happy adult life. My heart breaks for the youth who don't think they have a way out and choose the ultimate...

My Oldest son is 19 today! All I can say is OMG and WTH and I know if your talking to my sons they would tell you that I am not allowed to say OMG or WTH but geeez there really are no words to describe how fast the time goes and how today is a day filled with joy, tears, highs and lows.

19 is a big birthday in Canada...it is the year you are legal....you can now buy your own alcohol and not have to solicit people in front of the liqueur store to boot for you...LOL

I am so proud of my son and wish him the best on his life journey and wish that he always remembers in his heart that we love him deeply!

I find it very hard to 'stick' or 'stay' with one medium just as hard as I find putting my compulsion to create away to complete other life tasks such as laundry, work, preparing food.

I know so many creative humans suffer from the same disease, the crazy pull towards making, creating, painting, sewing, etc. Sometimes it feels like I am addicted to some sort of drug..I just can not stop... At least I am not hoarding!

I would love to hear your stories of compulsion, creation routines, habits.

This year has been a year of big change and tons of hard work. After my divorce/separation I sold my much bigger home to downsize into a smaller abode freeing me up so that I am not spending so much time doing yard/house work on my limited time off from my day job and cheaper taxed and bills in general.

We live closer to town now and can ride our bikes to the market, downtown, etc. The house was already remodeled and needed little work and I have a fantastic, large studio space....i love.

It seems like it has been forever to finish the school program I was working on, deal with the move and complete these changes but finally I can see some light at the end screaming at me to keep going so that I can and will reach my goals.

I finished school in July and have my national exam to write on November 3rd...wish me luck!

I hope to be creating more and focusing on the business side of my work this next year and in the next coming weeks will have a revamp of my website and branding ....so to speak.

You may have noticed the new blog look...

Max and the Wild Things by Maurice Sendak

After so much anticipation from my young son Finn we finally made it to the local theatre to see "Where the Wild Things Are" on the big screen. There are many things I am certain about in life one being the hours of pleasure my sons and I have enjoyed falling into the pages of this classic tale. For me as a young child it was the illustrations that reached out and pulled me into the world of Max and his Wild Things I think partly because my interest is aroused first from an artist perspective and really how can you not LOVE the master illustrations in this book.

Now, on to the heavy stuff. The stuff is keeping me up at 4:00am pondering life again because of the viewing of this movie. I asked my teenager who had seen the movie the night before not to fill me in on the details of the flick as I wanted to be "surprised"!

Surprised I was.

Indeed I did not expect the content or the adaptation of this book to be so grim and depressing filled with so many issues I dealt with as a young child like being raised by a single parent living a lonely life burning inside for attention from my parent. Also the strong story line revolved around the depression that the "Wild Things" lived under and the anger they were controlled by when Carol was mad, oh and yes, the depressing thought that the Sun is going to die...

For me the book shared with my children was magic with my thoughts always preferring the content to be happy. Maybe the movie seemed dark to me as when I was a child I lived in a house where we were all controlled by anger watching my mother and us be abused by one persons emotions??? So when the bitter dark side of the Wild Things developed as well as the anger that Carol exhibited when hurt brought me to a place that I know all too well.

I thought the movie to be dark and depressing even though I can respect and admire the wonderful job done with the costumes and emotions portrayed by the characters...Max was a fantastic roll played by Max Records...and the movie itself had a dream scape quality equal to independent films.

Maybe the movie did for me exactly what the director wished it to do for viewers? I just left the theatre feeling sad, lonely and depressed the exact opposite of how I feel when I close the pages of the book.

Don't know how Spike Jonze wanted me to feel but I will revert back to my own interpretation of this classic...

I think we have crossed over into fall, the rains are starting and all of our glorious hot weather is being tucked away is seems for next year.

Crossing over into the days of warm baking, hibernating, cuddling...(if I am lucky) and of course back to creating more art.

Another year of school has started for the boys as well as me...Woo Hoo last year for me!!

I just have to keep telling myself I can do it, May will arrive soon.

My positive attitude has carried me through many dark days so this hurdle can be jumped for sure!

Concentrating is hard with so many things on the plate but this year I feel much stronger, healthier, free. Finally I am free from the constricting emotionally abusive marriage I was chained too and have an opportunity to breath. Feeling confident, strong and happy is what I wish to share with the world

Today is International Day Against Homophobia

A day that has special meaning in our house...my middle son Aden is a homosexual youth with courage to walk his walk proudly amongst us.

He is an honour roll student , plays the violin, is a junior volunteer at a seniors home...is so very loved and accepted by our community and his peers at school. I think most of this is because of his shining amazing personality and soul carried by his confidence and joy for living.

He is just 14 years of age and already possess so many qualities humans 20 or 30 years his senior will never ever get. I LOVE my boy, I am proud of him for being who he is and not who society wants or thinks he should be.

Anytime a new family member or friend of ours finds out that he is gay, we always get the same response "but he is so young", "how does he know"......

REALLY??

When you were a young person starting to have feelings of love an desire for the sex of your liking were you not young, did you not pine for the cute person you had a crush on?

Think about it.

His feelings are normal feelings at a normal age. I think the misunderstanding surrounding homosexuality lead people to think that when you are a homosexual you don't really know until you are much older so I am happy to write this post and add a link to information so that understanding and tolerance will hopefully be the norm one day!

Creativity to say......I Love You

This little scene was made by my youngest son, Finn. I was in my studio studying and oh so quietly I hear a little Sneaky McSneaky coming up in the rear...."Oh" I say , "you little sneak", "You got me again"....There he was standing with his arm stretched out holding a handmade paper image of what he described as "mommy I made you". He has also crafted a house for me to live in including a TV for all those days I am bored and might want to watch a show or two...

Treasured they will be for sure.

I have been in the mood to create with my old trusty stand by, fabric and thread. I love creating pictures with thread...embroidery is kind of meditative, stitch by stitch. This piece is created by using basic muslin fabric in which I have embroidered an image of one of my girls then added paint for detail. I have attached the textile piece to a pine box frame.

I have been away for a little while catching up on some projects, getting children ready for the start of a new school year, and starting a new semester in the degree program I am taking!!! Gosh I am out of breath.....I really have wanted to post about this for a while now and feel really good about putting this up for Ya'll to see. One of my customers, a sweet person Michelle sent me a message one day asking if she could use one of my sketches/mini quilt designs for a tattoo she wanted to have done....she said it reminded her of herself and her daughter. I really love that first of all Michelle 'got it', the meaning behind this sketch as I designed it as a tribute to two of the most amazing residents I work with at the long term care facility....Myrtle and Eileen!! They are two ladies who have found each other and are always walking around holding hands, cuddling and just giving and receiving LOVE from each other.

Human contact that is what we crave, unconditional love, connection to another, to each other! We are all humans, does it matter if we are different in belief and or appearance??? I think not.

At the end of your life will you care?

Someone please tell me when

it happens......when do they go from this ........eating your blanket for comfort and security to...... This......mom, I want my hair dyed black with a bold blond streak in the center and snake bites??? I heard from all those folks how fast it goes and really when you are in the middle of the heat you do not or can not comprehend what they mean......it does go really fast. I am so proud of my middle son, straight A's, student counsel, band very social and outgoing, socially conscience and thoughtful...I do enjoy watching , helping, and being there, for the child to teen transformation that goes on in a child's life....it is such a huge change for everyone that if you blink all of a sudden you turn around and some MAN voice is talking in your house and you think who is that????

I have been working on a new series of pieces with a 'moody' theme depicting dark houses loaded with yummy texture and minimal lines. I think this mostly comes from my deep feelings lately surrounding kids, love, relationships etc. Sometimes when I drive the back country roads and fall upon the old rickety barns and out buildings, I wonder what the story is. How and who lived in that structure that was once a dwelling?

Today was a warm summer day with a mix of cloud to break it up.

I spent my time doing the usual house stuff like laundry, cleaning and some organizing, but after all of that I managed to paint a bit. I thought I would share some of the process with you all here in web land. The painting has been growing over the last week or so into what I like to think is so very close to being finished.

I feel limited today in what I can do about my eldest son....Julian. It has been and is a long, hard and tiring road with him. I feel sometimes as I am going to explode with frustration as he throws his life away......there is only so much you can do as a parent, watching from the sidelines. I just can not take his anger and abuse any longer and must ask him to leave. There are other children present in my home watching, idolizing him and the behaviour......I am exhausted, sad and feel powerless. I have to change that for me and my other children. Wish me luck.....

Mr. Eczema monster please go away!

Mr Finn is allergic to nuts and seeds and everything airborne.....and is always suffering with eczema on most of his body except his face. He does not really know any better since he has had this since three months of age but it does get so incredibly itchy for him.

He decided to let me give him an eczema monster tattoo so he could show it off in preschool.......

He keeps telling me that when he is five then he will be able to have peanuts...right mom??

What can I say, Mr. Finn Daniel is my third boy child and very very boy at that.....he loves all things spiderman, ninja turtle, and of course the transformers. Understanding the male energy through my children has been a loving, learning journey....I admire the boldness, tenderness, willingness to explore and try new things, fearless!

WIP......Sunday March 2, 2008

third layer.......

I am just coming up for air after my four year old just finishing up strep throat and some gastrointestinal thing......my 12 year old and his intense busy schedule and last but not least my 16 year old teenager who is so wildly independent (from birth!) and is on and off the track and driving me insane, plus we have been physco busy at the hospital (day job) while basically raising the boys on my own so that means all the cooking, cleaning, etc..........When everyone is well things runs smooth but after our little blip of illness we seem to be getting back to 'normal'.....Ha Ha....

Now I am focused again on work and catching up on computer stuff........hopefully I will be caught up by tonight!

In the mean time I thought I would share a work in progress with you.....

What can I say, some people blog about the trendy fashion finds for home and body, or some blog about feelings or rant and rave about politics......I am just addicted to art and would like to start sharing some of my favorites with you all as really blogging is mostly about 'sharing'!

I would like to procrastinate work today and share another favorite Lineanongrata !! In this shop you will find the work of Julia Freund an absolute sweet person and artist from France. She is a freelance illustrator who works in Paris and has the most amazing illustration/mixed media art available at her Etsy shop. I personally own one of her prints and can say the quality is amazing!!

I love Etsy and I am sure I do not have to list the reasons why as most people on the Internet these days have seen, been, or heard of Etsy.com.............I love finding new artists who make my heart pump a little faster and Amanda Blake is one of them.

She lives in Portland bringing us back in time with her oil portrait snapshots of times long ago.. I gaze at her shop often and am in love.

Small Ceramic Plate...............I love playing with clay especially since the pottery guild I belong to has a fantastic studio space available to all members...........I can go down there with my ipod to feel inspired by music and play with clay.

A sneak peek at a few of the pieces sent off to the Nahcotta Gallery ETAiii show, opening

Feb. 08.2008

I sent several textile pieces and one mixed media painting. I love doing textile work and being motivated by a deadline helps me get my butt in gear and bang it out.

This set is called 'Connections' and was created from one large piece of fabric that was first painted then taken apart and put back together in four unique small art quilts.

The idea being that even though we all live our own individual 'realities' we are all connected from that one same human thread.

This is a mixed media art cloth piece that I did for an art show in the fall of 2007. It was juried show and the theme revolved around the 'Mountain'.

This piece took home the top prize of Best in Show.

I was pleased with the outcome of the show and flattered that I won Best in Show....the weird thing is.............. I was totally unsure of this piece before I put it in the show????

I had to ask my good friend Tina's opinion about the quality of this piece........... that is so not like me. I go by my instinct and I know when I think a piece is right but something about this one stumped me.........I learned that sometimes it is okay to question a piece and be unsure as.....it is part of the process.

I thought I should do a plug for the book I was published in as the book was released last year in June.......This is really late, I know, but one of my New Years resolutions was to keep in touch and try to blog more instead of the hours wasted floating around the Internet.

An image of the book is located on the right and it is available at all major book sellers. I was invited to do a modern project (one large queen size quilt) for the book. I love the way the quilt turned out with the orange and the blue complimenting each other so fantastic!

Each quilt project is simple and encouraging for the first time quilter. The book is hardcover and is laid out well......This book is a must have for textile freaks like myself.

I have two more books out this year release dates in May.....I will keep you posted.

My 'workroom'/ studio

I tried to take a few pictures of my workroom but they all turned out bad We are in the grey winter season with very little light, my photographic creativity was not at it's finest.

I found the fantastic watercolor paper hidden away in my paper stash and am in absolute love with the way the paint reads on the paper as well as the smashing illustrations created upon it.

I find them simple with depth.

I have been working on some textile pieces that relate to form, color and simple lines.....trying to keep a mood or feeling when creating each piece.

I like to free myself from the 'thinking' process and just be in the moment of intimacy with the fabric, paint and thread.

I have also been busy working on some pieces for the upcoming Nahcotta Gallery

I sometimes like to get back to simple illustration just to have a space to create something sweet and simple with texture and depth.
I did these little illustrations last year sometime, maybe in the spring, and thought I would share.

This commission wall hanging was a piece for a modern cabin in a wilderness setting. The client wanted to have a piece to remind her of the view of the cabin but remain modern and contemporary in the design.
I love the colors.
